Just BE. Herbalism, IS: Mindfulness in Our Studies

Whenever we oversaturate on something, particularly subject study or learning an art or practice, we need to come back to and into, balance. Such can be the task with Herbalism study.

Just as a icy sorbet can act as a palate cleanser while dining, taking a step back for a moment, mindfully, can refresh us for our continued learning pursuits. Our intensity and focus deserve to hang loose, in perfect freedom. Beginner’s Mind, that ability to always have a perspective of newness no matter our advancement in learning, calls us to do so.

Meditation can fulfill this need, as well as observation. For some, they are one and the same. Taking a mindful walk in nature, such as on a farm, for instance, observing beauty and life, can restore. No longer photographing for the sake of Herbalism study, to research whether a flowering plant is plant medicine or not, photographing—observing the beauty of this plant ally—can offer up equal significance: healing properties, by just being in its presence.

There is a joy in the stillness.

There is abundance in all things living.

Whether a plant being provides medicine directly or not, sometimes the best medicine is beauty.

A walking meditation is simply, be-ing in every step. In the thick of it without attachment. Joy, peace and beauty are typical byproducts. Happy baby goats frolicking—adopted kids—and flowers that marvel through intricate petals and lavender hue, sustain and replenish, resetting the “study button.”

When we are present in our daily lives, without expectation of outcome in the moment, everything falls into place. Plants serving the purpose of just gracing our environment with their poise and beauty serve us well. Their intention is to just be. Shouldn’t we do the same?

Being an Herbalist is a journey of letting go. It is intuitive, as the plants speak the language of healing. Those thoughts that emerge into our minds, such as the answer to solving research or a plant solution for wellness support? They come from being present.

Nature inspires. Nature nurtures. Plants, flowers—all living things—can be our greatest teachers through experiential learning. Immersion need not be overwhelm. Immersion, in its truest sense, is remembrance of what we inherently knew all along.
